Sheldon Statewide Exhibit
The Exhibition “Picturing Nebraska” focuses on the people, places, and things that shape how we understand our state. The paintings, photographs, and prints that comprise this year’s exhibition, all offer different perspectives on Nebraska. Artists such as Keith Jacobshagen present sweeping views of the skies towering over the flat landscape. Nebraska born author and photographer Wright Morris creates an intimate portrait of a personal place in images such as Living Room, from Ed’s Place near Norfolk, Nebraska. Although devoid of figures, the photograph depicts the belongings of a home and evokes the people who inhabit its space. Together these artists, as well as others, offer a picture of Nebraska that is multifaceted and sometimes surprising.
This year’s Sheldon Statewide will feature a project by a UNL faculty member in addition to its own permanent collection. Liz Ingraham, Associate Professor of Art and Art History at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, will have selected pieces from her multiyear project, Mapping Nebraska, on view as part of the exhibition. Ingraham has traveled over 5,000 miles documenting the state’s rivers, roads, sand hills, and towns, representing all these features on a highly detailed topographical map. She then materializes this documentation by creating beautifully constructed quilt squares. A portion of Ingraham’s quilted map, along with photographs documenting her project will be included in the exhibition. As Statewide moves across Nebraska, the map area displayed will change to match its current location! In addition to the exhibition, statewide venues will have other educational opportunities. Art in Society in its third year, continues to provide select middle and high school students a chance to participate in an artist residency connected to the exhibition. In addition to the exhibition gallery guide and educational materials provided for teachers, Liz and Sarah will also be working to develop other outreach opportunities connected with her work and quilting.
