North Platte Rail Days

The second annual North Platte Rail Days is scheduled for September 14 – 17, 2017. The Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center took over the event in 2016 and with only a few short months of planning hosted an event that celebrated the railroad in North Platte and focused on community building. This year the focus is on once again attracting national and international visitors to North Platte.

The highlight of the event are the Saturday bus tours of Bailey Yard, and railfans responded with enthusiasm when the registration for the free tickets opened up online. To date, 681 tickets have been spoken for, with visitors making plans to come to North Platte from 30 states as well as Canada, Denmark, the UK and Germany. Of the 225 visitors registered from Nebraska, only 58 of those are from North Platte! This single day of nearly sold out bus tours of Bailey Yard is bringing more than 600 visitors to town!

For three full days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, visitors will be able to enjoy the Golden Spike Tower, a model train show and tours of the railroad museum in Cody Park. However Saturday the fun really kicks into high gear. The day starts off with a fortifying all-you-can-eat pancake feed at the Lincoln County Historical Museum, then the fun begins at Cody Park with yard tour departures, the displays of railroad equipment and demonstrations by the skilled women of Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard, the UP Employee Family Day Picnic, NebraskaLand National Bank Lil’ Spike Kid Zone, free Cody Park Kiddie rides, North Platte Jaycees Bingo, networking in the UP Retirees tent, and Concessions and Vendors all day. The evening winds up with Movies in the Park showing “An American Tale” in Cody Park.

The fun doesn’t stop there! North Platte’s Roller Derby “Heartland Hellcats” hosts the fourth annual Railtown Rumble, facing off against visiting Central Kansas Roller Derby at the D & N Event Center, 501 E. Walker Road.

For Rodeo fans, the North Platte Community College Rodeo Team hosts the NIRA Great Plains Region College Rodeo at the Wild West Arena, 2400 N. Buffalo Bill Ave. Performances at 7:00pm on Friday and Saturday.
